Remove damaged material from otherwise serviceable wheels and replace this material with a specially engineered metal matrix composite.

Repair Steps

  1. A lathe is used to remove the damaged material from the shell hub
    • Both the inboard and outboard hubs may be repaired
  2. The hub is built back up to slightly over nominal dimensions
  3. Final machining is carried out on a lathe
  4. Wheel bearings and seals are reinserted
  5. Wheel returns to service.
  6. Repair can be reapplied for future damage

After final machining the repaired wheels were sent to the Air Force Landing Gear Test Facility where they were fully assembled and then subjected to a battery of tests including static load and dynamic roll testing to evaluate the performance of the repair. The photos below show examples of similar testing performed during a previous repair qualification on the F-18 E/F main landing gear wheel.
